The essential joy of being with horses is that it brings us in contact with the rare elements of grace, beauty, spirit, and fire.

Our boy Freckles made a bad turn when we moved the horses from our pasture to a friend's so that ours could be fertilized. Freckles who from estimates is around thirty-three years old, AMAZING for a horse, has a special diet and cannot eat hay anymore. Last year he was able to substain his weight on grass. This year he cannot though he has been enjoying feasts on clover. We are now feeding him several times a day- old folks food- rather a mix of really good stuff to get him fat again. He has been checked again by the vet. His back teeth in one cheek almost gone.
Freckles has gotten old.
Really old. With a great attitude. A kind spirit. And still a little spark in his step.
We were very worried last week that it might be Freck's time. None of us live forever after all. But for now he seems happy, comfortable and maybe even gaining a little weight back.
So while it is very sad to see our pets aging out I try to just apreciate each day with them. Not thinking about what tomorrow will hold.
Friday night Toonces got Freckles ribbons from races won years ago. The fastest horse...sweet Freckles...and had their photos made together.
Freck is still a proud dude!
and this one cracks me up...Spirit is so nosy. He can't stand not being in the middle of things.
and me, horning in of course!
